The Smith Street Unit
The Smith Street Unit is an annexe of Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts, offering a specialised learning and behaviour support environment for students in Years 7–12. Established in 1990 in response to the growing need to support students with severe behavioural and mental health challenges, the Unit provides an intensive learning support setting designed to help students achieve their full potential.
Each student enrolled in the Smith Street Unit has a diagnosed mental health condition and may have co-existing needs. The Unit offers these students a safe and respectful haven where they feel cared for and are provided with the best opportunity to learn. Small class sizes, each led by a Special Education teacher and supported by a School Learning Support Officer (SLSO), ensure that teaching is personalised and responsive. Staff differentiate instruction across all Key Learning Areas, aligning content with the Australian Curriculum to meet individual needs through student-centred learning plans.
Students are referred to the Smith Street Unit by a Department of Education and Communities placement panel. Since its establishment, the Unit has remained a vital part of the Illawarra education community, providing a unique and supportive environment for students requiring intensive learning and behaviour support.
