Wollongong Council recently offered WHSPA a mentoring opportunity for songwriting and production. The mentors were Sikh-Australian rapper L Fresh the Lion (Sukhdeep Singh) and local Egyptian-Australian artist Kid Pharoah. They were adeptly supported by Wollongong Youth Services Development Worker, Pat. A true community connected event.
The students had three workshops in which they looked at rhyming patterns, creating imagery and messages, and how to create beats. They then jumped straight in to creating original songs. Some of the concepts integrated into the workshops were giving new things a go, dealing with discomfort, approaches to working through nerves such as visualising, collaborating with others and working together.
There were three groups, who came up with an original song each and then the students that were able to make it, performed these at Culture Mix on 19th October 2024, on the main stage. I want to thank all the students involved, who participated with open minds and enthusiasm and came up with some genuinely awesome songs. To go up on stage in front of a big crowd is not an easy thing for many, but this crew of students did it superbly! Well done to the wonderful students involved, you should all be proud of what you were able to achieve!
The students involved were: Jasper, Nella, Molly, Felix, Liam, Stella, Sam, Chase, Tilly, Brooke, Bobbi, Louie and Jack. Thanks to parents and families, also, for allowing the students to participate.
