Most young people spend 6 happy years at high school. That is not to suggest that high school does not have its periods of stress and anxiety. Manageable levels of stress and anxiety are a normal part of life and the majority of students, with the support of friends, family and teachers, are able to cope and bounce back from these times.

However a small but significant number of young people find it difficult to manage the stress and anxiety that many aspects of life can bring. For whatever reason, they lack the resilience to deal with a variety of life situations. This can result in anxiety and depression. Resilience is often referred to the ‘ability to bungee jump through life' or the ability to cope in healthy ways with the ‘ups and downs' that life can bring.

As part of the WHSPA School Development Day at the beginning of this term staff received an update about student wellbeing and mental healthfrom Sarah Jackson (national schools manager for the Inspire Foundation). Sarah presented information about the latest research evidence related to the mental health of young people along with practical ideas for teachers to promote positive student wellbeing at school.
