Students from WHSPA's HSC Earth and Environmental Science class went on a tour yesterday of Soil Co to see where our green bins go. They were researching a local sustainability initiative to help make society a more circular economy, rather than the linear "take, make and dump" model. We learned about how green waste and FOGO are converted to a rich soil product vital to our food chain, sporting fields and regeneration. Waste reduction is a related theme, and students were surprised to learn that the tip at Whyte's Gully could be full in ten years, causing a rate increase for local residents.
The students, many of whom will go on to study science at university next year, were excellent guests and asked great questions about the process during the tour from the friendly soil experts at Soil Co.
“Essentially, all life depends upon the soil…there can be no life without soil and no soil without life: they have evolved together.” Dr. Charles Kellogg, Soil Scientist.
